FAQs
How does Marly work?
Most people water their plants from the top, though plants actually absorb water from the bottom up.
Marly Pots are complete with active water reservoirs that sit at the bottom of the pot, to be drawn from as needed through a process called capillary action.
Once the water has been absorbed and is able to reach the plant's leaves, the water can then be used for photosynthesis and other essential plant processes.
By allowing the plant to absorb the amount of water it needs, when it needs it — we are eliminating the potential for over/under-watering that usually occurs while growing.
How often do I need to refill the water reservoir?
Generally, your Marly will only need to be refilled every 30-45 days.
Your plant will self-regulate its water intake. Factors such as temperature, plant species and plant size may impact how quickly your plant takes in water.
Fortunately, your Marly includes a water level indicator so you know exactly when to top-up your planter.
What is the planter made of?
Marly is made from a combination of virgin and recycled HDPE (High Density Poly Ethylene).
Our pots are highly durable and can easily be recycled in a variety of applications.
The root basket inside the pot is made from sustainably sourced recycled aluminum.
Is my Marly Pot sustainable?
It sure is!
Plastic pots traditionally take thousands of years to disintegrate. The chemicals in these plastics are well-documented and have numerous toxic effects on human and plant life alike.
The gradual accumulation of these chemicals in our environments can be hazardous, and the presence of micro-plastics in almost every living being and corner of the earth risks compounding the issue.
Because of this, we’re putting environmental conscious materials and practices at the forefront of our manufacturing efforts.
Do plants come with my Marly purchase?
Not yet! However, after you order your Marly, we will connect you with local nurseries to help fill your pot, no matter where you are.
What should I plant in my Marly?
Marly is an excellent planter for the majority of plants and you can't go wrong with most choices.
This includes bigger, leafy plants, smaller, compact plants, and even trees.

Can I use the self-watering planter for all types of plants?
Pretty much!
Marly has been designed to pair with the house plants that you would find in a regular plant store.
Experienced gardeners can also work with smaller trees or large shrubs.
Marly is made from materials that work just as well outdoors as they do in, so foliage that thrives outside in the elements will love Marly too.
Is Marly suitable for both indoor and outdoor use?
In a word, yes!
Your Marly is made from weather-resistant materials that will maintain color, structure and quality outside as well as in.
How do I clean and maintain my Marly self-watering planter?
The outside of your Marly planter can be easily hosed off or wiped down to remove dirt and dust.
To ensure that the inside of your Marly's reservoir remains fresh, you should regularly clean it between each full watering.
Simply lift the inner aluminum container and your plant up and out, wipe away any dirt, debris or leaves, then drop your plant back in.
Always use clean water when filling.
Are there any specific soil or fertilizer requirements?
The best soil for self-watering planters is a well-draining, lightweight potting mix that retains moisture without becoming waterlogged.
Look for a mix that includes ingredients like peat moss, perlite, and vermiculite.
These components help maintain good aeration and moisture retention, ensuring optimal water delivery from the reservoir to the plant roots.
What size options is Marly available in?
Both our large and small planters include a 10.5" aluminum container that is used to hold your plant and its soil.
Our smaller Marly planter is ~11in. tall
The larger Marly planter is ~19in. tall.
All planters include a set of small legs for stability which give the planter an extra 3in. when installed.
Longer legs can be purchased for stacking your Marly planters on top of one another, or for a taller standing planter.
Does my Marly self-watering planter help prevent overwatering or root rot?
Yes it does!
Your Marly provides a steady, controlled supply of water and ensures proper aeration, creating an optimal environment for plant roots, reducing the risks associated with overwatering and root rot.
Because Marly provides a consistent water supply, you don’t need to water as frequently.
Plus, your water level indicator will show when the reservoir needs refilling.
This reduces the risk of accidental overwatering.
Your plant's roots will receive a steady supply of water, preventing the soil from becoming waterlogged, a common cause of root rot.
Marly = healthy, happy plants.
